Something’s Fishy at Lake Chachabunga: Critical Thinking (4 weeks)

Are you clever enough to ask the right questions to solve the mystery? Students will study critical thinking skills and ultimately work as police detectives to solve a fun and engaging crime. Critical thinking allows students to become more self-reliant and independent learners. It also helps the students to evaluate their learning style and recognize their areas of strength and flaws. So why not finetune those critical thinking skills while having a great time? Join us for this cliffhanger of a class!

More Than Mother Goose (4 weeks)

Poetry, like music, art, and architecture, evokes feelings deep within us. Think about your favorite song and how the lyrics make you feel. Give your child the gift of poetry, allowing them to appreciate the deeper meaning of words and symbols, literary devices, as well as acquaint themselves with great poets and their context in history! Together, we will study masterful poems, including those that focus on important elements of growing up:

  • Family

  • Integrity and Strong Values

  • Kindness and Friendship

  • Determination and Work Ethic

  • Global Cultures and Community

Around the World in 28 Days: Geography Adventures (4 weeks)

Let’s jump on a jet plane and touch down in all the cool destinations you see in your National Geographic! Children always want to know more than facts about a country and here we will discover exciting travel facts and find some astonishing answers to questions like these:

  • Where is the fairytale castle in Germany?
  • What is the anthem of France called?
  • What does the money in Australia look like?
  • What is the name of the bird on the Guatemala flag?

Learning History Through the Movies (4 weeks)

Learn it at the movies and let Hollywood be the teacher! Let’s face it—we all remember the movies shown in our Driver’s Ed classes, or at least the effect they had on our classmates. Same with history! Watch it in a film, and the overall effect will imbed the information in your brain. Why teach history with movies?

  • Movies bring history to life by focusing on depth.

  • Movies inspire and bring characters to life.

  • They can be interactive and encourage discussion.

  • Movies can be easier to relate to.

This class will also help students understand that some movies are inaccurate on certain points. We will discuss the impact of movies on culture (even when they are misleading), challenge the viewpoint of the movie writer and director, and debate opposing viewpoints.

Movies to be viewed and discussed:

I Am David

Sound of Music

Young Mr. Lincoln

The Miracle Worker

Think Boldly: Critical Thinking (4 weeks)

An ordinary spoon and an extraordinary SpaceX rockets: what do they have in common? They were all invented once. During our lessons, we will learn how to think like an inventor, how to imagine the impossible, and even how to solve the mysteries of nature.

Every lesson we will also encounter a riddle: try this, for instance. In the 1920s in Britain people suddenly stopped clapping for the plays and performances. Why was that?

During these 5 introductory lessons we will:

  • Solve riddles and brainteasers
  • Come up with solutions to open-ended problems
  • Invent and imagine
  • Play creative games

Geography Jeopardy (4 weeks)

Time for Geography Jeopardy!

Our question for today—

This Asian island nation experiences 20 percent of the world’s 6.0-magnitude or higher temblors annually. Earthquakes that size can (and do) cause major destruction.

Answer: What is Japan?

An understanding of geography develops in children an understanding of 'place,' their own place in the world, and that of other people. Studying geography provides opportunities that nurture children’s vital interpersonal skills such as empathy, collaboration, and argumentation. All places and spaces have a history behind them, shaped by humans, earth, and climate. In this class, students will practice geography skills and explore countries, continents, and oceans. We will reinforce the memory of their newly discovered skills and facts with exciting jeopardy games with their classmates at the end of each class.

From the Indies to the Andes: Global Mythology (4 weeks)

Have you ever wondered where Thursday got its name? “Thursday” can be loosely translated as “Thor’s Day.” Thor is the Norse god of thunder, strength, and protection. So next time you’re going to arm wrestle someone, consider doing it on Thor’s day!

Join Ms. Eve as we learn more about mythology from cultures rich in diversity and tradition: Norse, Korean, Inca, Celtic, Polynesian, Egyptian, Hindu, Armenian, Slavic and more! We will discuss why Egyptians worshiped cats, who Aramazd is and what powers he holds, and why there are two very different types of Korean mythology. What is the true story of Maui and how did he help create the Pacific islands? You won’t want to miss this incredible journey through culture and country as we discuss the legends in mythology from around the globe.

Transform the World Through Words (4 weeks)

Classes will be peppered with opportunities to learn and practice creative expressions, funny tongue twisters, idioms and proverbs in English as well as in other languages (such as Hindi, Zulu, Korean, Japanese, and Spanish). We will use these fun experiences as launching pads to explore cultures and histories around the world through global poetry. Reciting a poem of their choice, students will gain the skills needed to effectively deliver poetry to an audience. The skills gained through this practice will be applicable throughout life, as effective communication is key when striving to encourage, educate, and inspire others, as clearly seen through the deliveries of great leaders like Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Steve Jobs. This class is a gift that keeps on giving.
