History Mirrored in Art and Music

Uncover the fascinating and surprising connections between art, music, and history. Together, we will learn to identify basic symbols, colors, and materials that reveal hints about the culture that produced it. As we move through history, we will find Picasso’s view of war, Velasquez’s perception of the Spanish aristocracy, and Leonardo DaVinci’s far-reaching theories shared through their art. Music is much the same! Bach’s perspective on faith, Beethoven’s view of Napoleon, Wagner’s stance on industrialization, and Shostakovich’s animosity toward the Soviet government-- all of these are reflected through their music. Together we will learn to find important clues in great art and magnificent music, rounding out our understanding of the past.
