Anatomy: The Wonder of You (7 weeks)

Did you know that every second, your body produces 25 million new cells? That means in 15 seconds, you will have produced more cells than there are people in the United States.

Did you know that there is anywhere between 60,000-100,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body? If they were taken out and laid end-to-end, they would be long enough to travel around the world more than three times.

In this class, we will learn how to identify and name various anatomical parts of the human body including the skeleton, major veins and arteries, major muscles, and their function. At the conclusion of the course, we will compare human anatomy with the anatomy of a fetal pig in a dissection.

Pseudo Sciences: Are They Real or Are They Fake? (5 weeks)
Astrology, hypnosis, aromatherapy, acupuncture—what do they have in common? They are considered Pseudoscience. Pseudoscience includes beliefs, theories, or practices that have been or are considered scientific but have no basis in scientific fact. What makes some information “science-based”? There are many other pseudosciences that do not have current scientific research backing them up. Does that make them less valid? Or is there still some truth behind these pseudo-sciences? In this class, we will learn about some of these pseudosciences and discuss some of the philosophies of scientific biases.

Science in the Movies: Impossible or Possible? (4 weeks)

Join us for this exciting and thought-provoking class of science and ethics! Students will view movies selected from this list: Big Hero 6, Star Trek episodes, I am Legend, Superman,  and Avatar.  We will discuss what they got right, what they got wrong, and some of the philosophical issues presented in the film. Let's get into the sticky subject of artificial intelligence, global warming, genetic engineering, cloning, and more. This is a unique learning experience that is sure to make for deep thinking for your student and incredible dinner conversation for your family.
