Remembering Me: Autobiographies and Journaling (4 weeks)

Learning how to express yourself is key to understanding who you are and how you develop. In this class, students dive into expressing themselves and their dreams. Through an exciting mix of journal entries, biographies, and event recording, students explore themselves. Correct grammar, sentence structure, and tenses will accompany them on their literary journey. 

 

Week 1 - Who am I, and who do I want to be? Autobiographies and basic sentence structure.
Week 2 - Where have I been, and where do I want to go? Event recording and tense practice.
Week 3 - What have I done, and what do I still want to do? Journal entries.
Week 4 - What do I want to do next, and who do I want to be now? Autobiographies and positivity practice.

 

Release the Imagination: Creative Writing (4 weeks)

The words on the page do not matter; it’s the image waiting beyond that catches our attention. Students free their imaginations, describing people and emotions vividly. Inanimate objects take on new life, and characters run across the page. Students recognize the power and freedom found in a story. 

 

Week 1 - ‘Next Line’, the elements of a story, and basic sentence structure.

Week 2 - Identifying the plot problem, forming a simple short story, and class paragraph story workshop.

Week 3 - Independent paragraph story workshop; characters and plots.

Week 4 - Full-page story workshop, story sharing, and game review.

 

Discovering Hidden Tales: Research and Biographies (4 weeks)

Too often forgotten, courageous people are scattered across our history and lives. Students discover how to make these people unforgettable by recording events, achievements, and characteristics of their leaders. Legacy lives on, and students will create theirs.

 

Week 1 - Forming a research paragraph, learning to research, and in-class paragraph workshop on parent or guardian.

Week 2 - Guided research; independent paragraph workshop on role model.

Week 3 - Guided research; revision; independent paragraph workshop on famous individual.

Week 4 - Independent research on choice topic; workshop opportunity; game review.

 

Come to the Circus: Advertising and Informative Writing (4 weeks)

In a world bustling with information, knowing how to create useful, effective information is exciting and crucial. Students plunge into basic design, eye-catching phrases, simple research, and the power of a picture. While writing about their most fulfilling activities and places, students recognize the strength of words.

 

Week 1 - Creating an eye-catching poster, balancing words and a picture, and using strong action verbs.

Week 2 - Creating an engaging flier, balancing intriguing information and pictures, and writing in full, strong sentences.

Week 3 - Creating an effective brochure, balancing and organizing information with pictures, and conducting simple research.

Week 4 - Solo creation workshop; review.

 

Slow and Steady: Life Lessons Through Stories (4 weeks)

Aesop’s fables, written over 2000 years ago, hold direct relevance today. Morals do not change; instead, we do. Students write their own fables, exploring their values and deciding what matters to them. In an effort to explain the world around us, students dive into folktales and myths, discovering that the world is a pulsing kaleidoscope, and we can only describe what we think we see.

 

Week 1 - Identifying fables, exploring Aesop’s fables, and forming morals.

Week 2 - Fable writing workshop; forming one- to two-paragraph stories.

Week 3 - Curious explanations; Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories; one- to two-paragraph workshop.

Week 4 - Presentations, discussion on the power of stories, and game review.

 

Me and My Family: Familial Ties (4 weeks)

Our families mold us into who we are, whether that family is blood-related or made up of the creative, loving individuals around us. Students dive into their family history, recording their families’ adventures and using dialogue and descriptive language to strengthen their stories.

 

Week 1 - Who am I? Autobiographies and compound sentences.

Week 2 - Who is in my family? Simple family history and biography paragraph workshop.

Week 3 - Discovering interesting family stories; story paragraph workshop.

Week 4 - Presentations and review.

 

Convincing Others: Academic Argumentative Writing (4 weeks)

Learning we can make a change in the world can alter how we view ourselves and our potential as individuals. Students explore the power of persuasion through written and oral debates, and challenge themselves to convince others. Ultimately, we have the power to change the world. The only question is, do we understand how to?

 

Week 1 - What is an argument? Examples and outline workshop.

Week 2 - Brainstorming arguments; introduction to debate.

Week 3 - Workshop writing; forming supported arguments.

Week 4 - Argument presentations. Are you convinced?

 

The What, How, and Why: Research Papers (4 weeks)

Where does our curiosity go when we grow up? Perhaps it goes to the young minds of children—since they are always full of fascinating questions. Through interactive research exploration, students gain the skills to research independently, answer their questions, and explain their reasoning. Questions will not go unexplored, and research will not go to waste.

 

Week 1 - What is a research paper? Examples and outlining; brainstorming research topics.

Week 2 - In-class lesson on conducting research; discussion on creditable resources and identifying unreliable resources.

Week 3 - Research workshop; creating introductions and forming a body that flows.

Week 4 - Research workshop; presentations; review.
