Writing for The Wall Street Journal: Journalism (4 weeks)

Accurate recording of events and individuals is a crucial skill, especially in a world bustling with information and opinions. How can a word change a phrase? How does a picture alter an article? Students dive into the intricacies of journalism as they record personal events, spotlight role models, and seek truth through writing.

 

The Soaring and the Scaley Paths: Avian and Reptilian Research Paper (4 weeks)

The world demands our attention; attention to detail, functioning, and beauty. Students discover the inner workings of research as they choose a creature, synthesize research, and learn how to present scientific findings.

 

Week 1 - Bird and reptile phylogenies; research paper example; brainstorming.

Week 2 - Researching methods; reading and interpreting scientific studies; outline.

Week 3 - Synthesizing research; workshopping.

Week 4 - Briefing paper; presentations; game review.

 

Cut, Cut, CUT: Playwriting and Short Stories (4 weeks)

Creative writing is among the most liberating activities of the mind. You become a character; you transport to a sanctuary; you leave what you’ve known for something you somehow know better. Through fictional challenges and with literary magic tools, students tackle building a world, character, and story. Students take with them the life-long lesson of creativity and perspective as they challenge themselves to imagine.

 

Week 1 - Story example; plots; characters, setting, and world building. 

Week 2 - Plot twists; riddles; points of view; narration.

Week 3 - Irony; suspense; Shakespeare.

Week 4 - Revision and presentation.
