Listen Up: Persuasive Writing (4 weeks)

The world has been shaken by the voices of individuals of purpose and determination. Students recognize their potential to initiate change as they engage in purposeful persuasive review. Through debate and revision, students examine the elements of argument, and begin to understand the power of persuasion.

 

Week 1 - Elements of a persuasive piece; outlining; exploring argumentative topics.

Week 2 - Persuasive workshop; 200-word paper.

Week 3 - Persuasive workshop; 500-word paper.

Week 4 - Guided revision; debate; game review.

 

The Talking Camera: Creative, Descriptive Writing (4 weeks)

Moments are meant to be lived, whether they are being experienced for the first time or relived for the thousandth time. What can one scene tell us? What is held in a single moment? Students dive into the photos and derive their own stories from the pixels. What happened? What will spring to life when we take a look? Students discover how to turn moments into memories with descriptive language.

 

Week 1 - Riddles, metaphors, smilies, and moments; recognizing and using descriptive language.

Week 2 - One-line stories; adjectives, adverbs, and action verbs; perspective.

Week 3 - Describing a story through a moment; flashbacks and implied information.

Week 4 - Short story presentations; game review.

 

Roses are Red, and Violets are Purple: Poetry (4 weeks)

The best-known stories and tales were passed down orally, and many in iambic pentameter, a form of poetry. Poetry, a solely human experience, pulses through cultures and attempts to convey emotion and experience through words. Edgar Allan Poe, an American poet, once said, “Poetry is the rhythmical creation of beauty in words.” While exploring the ins and outs of poetry, students discover the intricacies and double meanings of language.

 

Week 1 - Hink pinks; couplets; rhyming schemes.

Week 2 - Concrete poetry; imagery; acrostic poetry.

Week 3 - Sarcastic poetry; Shel Silverstein; symbolism in poetry.

Week 4 - Recitations; poetry slam; game review.

 

Role Models: Famous People and the Essay (4 weeks)

We decide who we want to become by studying the people around us, and we learn how they became who they are through questioning. How did you become who you are? What events shaped your life? What was your most trying moment? Through interactive research and workshops, students engage in discovering people and the events that shaped how history remembers them.

 

Week 1 - Researching; forming research paragraphs; in-class topic workshop.

Week 2 - Thesis statements; guided research; 200-word essay workshop.

Week 3 - Guided research; 500-word essay workshop.

Week 4 - Revision; presentations; game review.
