Conveying Experiences Effectively: Narrative Writing (8 weeks)

Narratives play an essential role in sharing experiences and lessons. In thoughtfully written narratives, the imagination is stimulated and artistic expression is achieved. Students compose narratives that lure the reader deeper into the story, discovering striking characters, scenes, and interactive detail. Through mimicry and experimentation, students learn to express their stories in an engaging, concise, creative fashion. Their narratives demonstrate understanding of structure, detail, language, and human emotion. As students explore and share their experiences, they come to embrace themselves, not only as writers, but as individuals.

Milestone: Ability to express with fluidity, strength, and engagement in a variety of situations and with a variety of prompts.

Ace Your Research Paper (8 weeks)

Research writing is among the most demanding and precise forms of writing. It forces serious consideration of what to focus your thoughts on and ideas that may need addressment within the work. It forces students to organize their thoughts and streamline their thinking, constantly aware of word choice and delivery. Developing skills in essay writing, professionality, and research integration, students build on their literary subtleties and begin to recognize flow in their writing.

Students gain an appreciation for the work of others as they learn to research, cite, quote, and paraphrase. Through experimentation and exploration, they are taught when to add other forms of media, including charts, audio, and videos. Students build on their critical and creative thinking skills as they compose strongly supported, concisely organized research pieces.

Milestone: Ability to write research-supported paragraphs that are organized, engaging, and clear; ability to conduct proper formal research.

Poetry Workshop: Sharpen Your Vision (8 weeks)

Writing poetry builds an appreciation for the profound beauty of human life. Poetry allows individuals to express emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a creative manner. Through rhythm, symbolism, count, and rhyme, the past and the present come to life in vivid color. In a mix of mimicry and analysis, students immerse themselves in poetry, pausing and finding themselves in the inner workings of someone else’s thoughts.

Literary devices become tools to manipulate language and create an intense, sensory experience through language. Students play with the physical and rhythmical aspects of poetry to convey deeper ideas than those seen on the page. On the page, titles become mystery boxes, and metaphors and similes become commonplace. Students gain an appreciation for creative expression and human connection through poetry. Studying poetry from around the world, students come to understand the pulsing unity of emotion and creative expression.

Milestone: Expanded understanding of poetry as a form of expression through analysis and mimicking; ability to analyze and create various forms of poetry.

The Art of Persuasion (8 weeks)

Persuasive writing is among the most engaging and demanding forms of writing. It asks writers to understand various viewpoints, support points with credible evidence, and present compelling arguments in an organized, winning fashion. In a mix of debate and written argument, students plunge into persuasion, building pieces that are supported, powerful, and strikingly clear. Strengthening their critical and creative thinking skills, students actively acknowledge opposing claims and present evidence in a logical, orderly fashion.

Students are taught how to find credible sources, quote and paraphrase others effectively, and navigate opposing sides. Building on essay writing and research skills, students learn to use powerful language and evidence, effectively supporting their points. Through active language, strong points, and relevant examples, students engage the audience in understanding the art of argument.

Milestone: Ability to express ideas with strong, applicable support in an organized, engaging fashion.
