Persuasive Writing (8 weeks)

Persuasive writing is among the most engaging and demanding forms of writing. It asks writers to understand various viewpoints, support points with credible evidence, and present compelling arguments in an organized, winning fashion. In a mix of debate and written argument, students plunge into persuasion, building pieces that are supported, powerful, and strikingly clear. Students are taught how to find credible sources, quote and paraphrase others effectively, and navigate opposing sides. Through active language, strong points, and relevant examples, students engage the audience in understanding the art of argument.

Milestone: Ability to express ideas in a supported, organized fashion with strong, engaging language.

Behind the Scenes: Short Stories and the Descriptive Essay (8 weeks)

The human experience is complex, intense, and real. The stories that understand the complexities of humanity are the ones that pull us in, compelling us to keep reading, dreaming, and hoping. Through vivid, alluring language, students create characters and situations that breathe life and act around the reader. Students create characters that understand and work with human emotions like fear, anger, and thoughtfulness. Scenes ripple with life, and you can hear the wind and smell last night’s downpour in the soft air. Students explore the tapestry of life through literary devices, plot elements, and character creation. They create their own worlds and characters, drawing out innumerable plots and possibilities for change. Through exploration and experimentation, students go behind the scenes of creative writing and discover that it’s limitless.

Milestone: Ability to sketch characters that connect with the audience and situations that the audience sits on the edge of their seats for, and to understand how that happens.

Rhyme and Reason: Understanding Poetry (8 weeks)

“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” —Robert Frost

Poetry has transformed throughout the centuries, emerging from strict rhythm and rhyme to free verse and concrete poetry. Exploring various poem types, students will examine tones and themes to decipher the poet’s intention. Students will engage in analyzing a poem of their choice, engaging in thoughtful, elaborate discussion. And suddenly, before you know it, you’ve transformed into an informed poet!
