From Then to Now: Evolution (9 weeks)

All students should understand the theory of evolution from a scientific perspective. This class is a beginner’s guide to evolution: what is the theory of evolution and how was it developed? How does Natural Selection drive evolution ever onward? We will survey the evidence of evolution including homologous structures, fossil records, eye-witness accounts, and many others. We will discuss the theory of human evolution based on fossil record evidence. Finally, we will learn about speciation and how new species are made through evolution over time.

Science in the Movies (4 weeks)

Join us for this exciting and thought-provoking class of science and ethics. Students will view Jurassic Park, Two Episodes from Star Trek Voyager, and The Day After Tomorrow or I Robot (depending on which is easier for students to access). Each of these movies includes different types of science AND huge science-based ethical issues that we will discuss. Let's get into the sticky subject of artificial intelligence, global warming, genetic engineering, cloning, and more. This is a unique learning experience that is sure to make for deep thinking for your student and an incredible dinner conversation for your family.

Animal Specializations and Dissections (3 weeks)

Join us as we learn about some of the spectacular ways animals have adapted to survive and thrive in their environments. We will explore the differences and similarities between animal species and discover the really crazy unique abilities of some animals. Finally, after all our study and research, it will be time for a scientific debate: How much have humans influenced animals? AND should humans continue to influence animals to adapt to us?

Dissection is an essential part of every student’s science education. In this class, we will take a closer, inside look at the anatomical differences in various types of animals. We will further our understanding of how different types of animals have adapted in different ways to survive in the same environment. We will also discuss the similarities found in all the animal species. Every animal (even the ones we are so used to seeing) has evolved and developed amazing adaptations that allow them to thrive!
