Create a Tapa Cloth

Create a Tapa Cloth

A tapa cloth is a bark cloth made in the islands of the Pacific Ocean. Unlike its name, it isn’t made of textile at all. Instead, it is made through the process of softening the bark of shrubs and trees. Investigate the natural materials, symbols, and making process through close study of tapa cloths in the Museum’s collection. Then plan your own design with drawings of animals, flowers, or patterns that you see in your own community.
