Add & Subtract Automaticity Experts: Sumatran Elephants

Sumatran Elephants didn’t become experts at adding and subtracting by choice, but by necessity. It all happened one day when one Sumatran Elephant was counting her ribs: 1, 2, … 20. What?! Other Asian elephants only have 19. So, she counted again. She was right! She had 20 ribs. To prove this to other Asian elephants, she had to add them up and then subtract them, over and over again. Now all Sumatran Elephants (who have since then learned that they, too, have 20 ribs) have mastered the automaticity of addition and subtraction.
