A SURVEY OF GREAT WORKS: ART AND MUSIC
“Art is the signature of civilizations.” -- Beverley Sills.
From the beginning of time, as soon as man had found a way to eat and protect his family, humans created art. The painting in the caves of Lascaux, France, the beautiful Michelangelo paintings in the Sistine Chapel, Chagall’s stained glass windows in Reims Cathedral – they were all created to express feelings that could not be expressed through words. Musical masterpieces composed throughout the ages have been responses to the beauties of creation, historical events, or thoughts and feelings. Through this survey, we will look at great art and listen to musical landmark compositions, discuss what made them unique and how they make us feel. We will study their creators—what caused them to create? What challenges did these artists and composers have to overcome and what can we learn from their lives to help us become even better than we are?
